The world is under attack

December 8, 1941

By Franklin D. Roosevelt

As I told Congress earlier today, we must declare war on Japan for their unprovoked attack on the United States which will certainly go down in history with infamy.

Before this attack, we had perfectly fine diplomatic relations. They even went as far as to give us a medal of peace.

Yet this is the very same nation which chose to attack us.

This is no coincidence. The distance makes it obvious.

We are far from the only nation to be attacked by Japan either. Within just the past few days, they have attacked Malaya, Hong Kong, Guam, the Philippine Islands, Wake Island, and Midway Island.

This is something we will not accept. This is something we must not accept.

Despite our concerns, we have tried our best to stay out of the war taking place throughout other nations, as we were not the ones being attacked.

Now we are.

And we must fight back.

I’d like to end this post with the very same words I said to Congress about the future of this conflict:

With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding determination of our people - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God.
